By Lance Winslow Have you ever noticed that franchise companies have employees at the franchised outlets, who wear the exact same uniform, even when you orientate completely different state. Did you know that many franchise companies have dress codes and stipulations about apparel in their confidential operations manual, which are the same for many countries. In other words the McDonald's uniform in Venezuela could be the same exact uniform, which is worn in Hawaii. Interesting isn't? There is a good reason for this it has to do with consistency and brand name image. Each franchisor needs to consider this advantage that can be used in franchising. It is for that reason that most companies address this issue in their confidential operations manual, the initial training and even in the original franchise agreement and disclosure documents. In fact, in my company we put a clause in the franchise agreement to address apparel issues in our company; 3.10 Apparel Franchisee and its employees must wear shirts, jackets or other approved apparel with The Car Wash Guys logo as designated by Franchisor when performing Services for the Franchised Business. In the event Franchisee operated any business(es)other than the Franchised Business or other franchises offered by Franchisor to the extent expressly permitted in Section 3.3, the personnel employed in such other business(es) must wear apparel that does not feature any of the marks or color schemes of the Franchised Business. -- --- --- --- --- Although our company is a small franchise system operated only a couple dozen states, we still felt it was necessary to address this issue. All franchise companies should consider this no matter their size. A competent franchise attorney can best help franchise in executives determine the best legal strategies to insure consistency of uniform apparel. Consider this in 2006. Making Bread on Antigua
By Michael Russell Douglas McVicars and partner Dianne White, who've just opened their fifth link in a chain of bread and pastry shops in Antigua have turned out to have the right stuff when it comes to making a living out of French bread and sandwiches. Doug, a former Home Depot exec in Toronto, and Dianne, a recently graduated architect, moved to Antigua in mid 2003. Doug started working part - time for Franciane in January of 2004, and was soon offered the position of manager with profits sharing, full benefits and incentives including shares in the business. Today Franciane's sells around 300,000 sandwiches a year; this on an island with a population of just over 70,000. The business has now expanded to five shops in total with plans to open franchises in other Caribbean islands, including St. Lucia, St. Kitts & Nevis, and Dominica in the next year or two. Dianne, using her training as an architect designed the last shop. It was designed to serve as the prototype for the planned expansion. Doug says that he had to make a major change in the direction that Franciane's was heading after he took over. He felt the former manager was targeting the wrong clientele; ex-pats, tourists, yachties. So the first thing he did after taking it over was change it into a local place, targeting the locals. He bought more produce on-island, whereas the former manager had imported a lot from France. He made drastic changes in the menu. Tuna, crab, turkey, roast beef and local saltfish replaced pat and Brie. This made for heartier sandwiches, which were welcomed by the local population. They have had competition from a new Subway franchise that opened six months ago, but it has not affected their sales. Doug says it's because they're very expensive, selling items for $20 that Franciane's has for $10. There was an expected loss of a few customers, but others who were happy to see a shorter line at Franciane's quickly replaced them. Antigua also has its traditional types of breads, which are heavier, and often laden with tinned butter, pork sausage and cheese. "That was one of my first experiences when I first came here", Doug says. "Dianne took me to Brownie's (bakery)". "Yes", Dianne recalls. "I got you a sandwich with sausage and cheese". "It was different", Doug adds, "but it was nice, very heavy. But don't get me wrong, you can't eat our sandwiches every day either." Quite a few customers might beg to differ. Franciane's staff know the regulars who eat either the same sandwich every day, or mix and match the fillings, but nevertheless, come in at around the same time every day. Dianne says. "They seem to like it, and what we try to do is to provide them with the right fillings that they want. Like saltfish and red herring. We will also be carrying the local cheese, because not everyone likes cheddar and Swiss. They seem to be very attached to the tinned cheese. So we're still trying to add to the menu". Antiguans were already aware of French bread because there was formerly a Swiss bakery located in a popular tourist section of the island along with another French bakery in the capital, St. John's. Slowing down from the pace of life in Toronto has been a welcome change for the couple. Doug and Dianne didn't even realise how much their pace had changed, until a recent trip through Miami, when they were sauntering to catch a flight, while being bumped and glared at by North Americans trying to get to the plane. "After things like that," Dianne says, "you just begin to remember why you left. Everybody (there) is moving as though every single moment of the day counts. When you're here for two years, you don't realise how much you've actually slowed down." Doug says he's satisfied with the clothes and other items he can buy on island. Dianne might have a few more complaints, as, like most women, she tends to crave a little more variety in terms of shopping. Nonetheless, she's content to hop on a flight to Puerto Rico whenever the need arises. Many locals do the same. They've adjusted to the island supermarket schedules in terms of the availability of fresh produce, which disappears quickly on weekends. Doug recalls the shocked reaction by some international students at a medical school, who frequent one of Franciane's outlets, when they were told there was no lettuce for their sandwiches. "They were like, 'What do you mean you don't have lettuce?'" he recounts. "And I asked them, well, how did you get here? And they go, 'By plane.' And I said, ok, do you see any roads leading from here to Miami?" "Procurement on the island is not as easy as it looks," he says. "There are a few difficult times of year, like November when the hotels re-open, and we may end up short." They've learned how to develop connections with the local wholesalers, who will warn them of expected shortages ahead of time. The couple used to import a 20 ft. container of authentic French bread and pastries once every three months, but the business' popularity has now changed that to a container every 28 days. Many people have expressed scepticism that a fairly young company has branched out so quickly, but Doug says Franciane's is showing no signs of slowing down, and in fact, they're planning at least two other stores, including one within the airport. And are they happy with their decision to migrate to the Caribbean? Give Doug the last word: "I always said I was going to live in the Caribbean by my early 40s," he says. "And I said, you know what, if you never do it, you'll never do it. A good friend of mine in Toronto said, 'you're gonna come back.' But I might go to another island, I don't know what I'll do, but I like it here. I really do." Face Peels - Phenol and Trichloroacetic Acid
By Renee Billancourt Chemical Peel Information A Chemical Peel is the medical terminology for what most people refer to as chemical facial peel, chemical face peel, acne chemical peel, and chemical skin peel. A Chemical Peel procedure utilizes a chemical solution such as Phenol and trichloroacetic acid to restore wrinkled, blemished, unevenly pigmented, or sun-damaged facial skin. This solution essentially peels away skins top layers. Length and details of the Chemical Peel procedure The length of the Chemical Peel procedure varies, but typically takes 1 to 2 hours for full face.
Typically no anesthesia is required, but sedation is sometimes utilized
Most Chemical Peel procedures are routinely outpatient. For those individuals seeking a full-face phenol peel inpatient admission may be required. (1 to 2 days.) Risks and/or complications related to the Chemical Peel procedure Possible side effects for both types of Chemical Peels include temporary throbbing, tingling, swelling, redness and sensitivity to sun. Specific side effects for the Phenol method include a permanent lightening of treated skin, frequently resulting in the permanent loss of ability to tan.
In addition there are other associated risks with this procedure that include the chance infection, scarring, outbreak of skin allergies, fever blisters, and cold sores. Specific side associated risks for the Phenol method include abnormal color changes of the permanent type and in extremely rare cases; heart irregularities. For most patients undergoing a phenol Chemical Peel the recovery time needed should result in new skin formation in approximately 7 to 21 days. Patients undergoing the trichloroacetic acid TCA will result in new skin forming in 5 to 10 days. Patients can resume normal activities in approximately 2 to 4 weeks, with complete recovery in 3 to 6 months. Long-term results of Chemical Peel procedure The effectiveness and duration of the Chemical Peel varies with the individual. Those with fair, thin skin with minute wrinkles will experience the greatest results. Of the two Chemical Peel methods the Phenol is more permanent in its duration. How much does a Chemical Peel cost? Costs for a Chemical Peel run in-between $700 to $1000. Will my insurance cover a Chemical Peel procedure? Because a Chemical Peel is considered an elective procedure, insurance usually will not cover the operation. However some costs may be covered if there is a medical necessary behind the procedure. As always consult with your physician and health insurance plan. Think INSIDE the Square to Keep Those Love Fires Burning
By Dorothy Thompson I was sitting in my sanctuary in my back yard contemplating the worlds mysteries and minding my own business when a fellow neighbor walked up to me and started a conversation. As he looked a little distressed, I invited him into my little spiritual oasis and offered him a cup of coffee. He graciously accepted and sat down in one of the cushioned chairs, albeit slightly uneasy. I could tell by looking at him that he was troubled and I asked him what the matter was. He sighed, took a sip of his coffee and began to tell me how much he was becoming disillusioned with work and the whole scheme of things. It seemed that the bottom line of the matter was that he was tired of pulling the weight for his family and wanted out. Elmer, I said, how long have you been married? Too long, was his reply. Im working two jobs while shes sitting home, doing nothing. The spark has gone out of my marriage and I see no other alternative than to end it. He took a sip of his coffee and put it back down on the patio table. The worry in his eyes was evident and I felt the urge to fix things, as was my nature when it comes to helping people not only find their soul mates, but keep them as well. Elmer, I began, when I tell you this, you have to keep in mind that Im telling you from a professional standpoint and not as a friend. You understand, dont you? Im listening, he said. You remember when you married Fran and all the world was a happy and blissful place? I asked him. Sure, I remember. What has happened here is that when you first got married, you had the tendency to think outside of the square, I said. Outside of the square? Yes, instead of focusing on yourself, you took on responsibilities such as caring for your family and all those other obligations that entails when one agrees to marry. You put your own needs aside to make sure that your wife and children were well cared for. What has happened is reality crashed down upon you and you have no inner resources left in which to restore things to the way they were. Basically, Elmer, youre a walking time bomb, ready to explode anytime and it doesnt have to be that way. It doesnt? Of course, it doesnt. Its time to think inside the square, Elmer. Its time you focused on what makes you happy in order to make the rest of your family happy. Youve got a point there, he said. Youve got to begin with what makes Elmer happy, I continued. Look at you. Youre working two jobs and you come home and all you can do is eat a little dinner and go to bed. Then, you get back up and do it all over again. Its no wonder that youre distressed. What we have here, Elmer, is not disillusionment with your marriage; its disillusionment with yourself and you dont even realize it. But, I have to work two jobs, he interrupted. Theres the mortgage, the kids college tuition, car payments Elmer, stop right there, I interrupted. What you are doing is looking outside of the square again. Look inside of the square and what do you see? Elmer stopped and thought for a moment. I see someone who wants good things in life, he said. I see not having to worry over bills and having a chance to enjoy life instead of always fretting over whats going to get paid this month and what isnt. Okay, Elmer, I said, what can you do to make this happen for you? Tell my wife to get a job? Yes, that would certainly help, but were not talking about your wife right now; were talking about you. What can you do for yourself to keep your marriage alive and become a happier person within? Accept the things I cannot change and focus on the things I can? And how do you do that? I asked. By looking inside the square and not blaming others for my unhappiness? Exactly. Elmer is but one of the millions of people in the world that think running away from their problems is the solution to finding happiness within themselves. And theyre dead wrong. Running away only prolongs the problem and, in fact, can intensify the very problem that you need to fix. Once Elmer understands what he has to fix about himself, only positive energy will flow, which will eradicate the negativities in his life. I saw Elmer a week later while I was pruning my shrubs and he stopped for a bit to tell me his good news. I just have to tell you, he said, out of breath. I took your advice and started thinking inside the square. I took up cycling like I used to do in my twenties. After that, I told my wife that from now on, Im going to do this twice a week. She looked at me in astonishment, but then said, Elmer, thats wonderful! I was so surprised that she would approve of this. After that, I joined a gym and chewed the fat with my buddies there. Ive never been happier! Thats wonderful, Elmer, I said. And, how is your marriage? Oh, thats the best part, he said, excitedly. My wife looks at me like Im a new man. It seems my positive attitude was contagious and even her own attitude has changed. Shes thinking of joining me for a long-distance cycling trip to the mountains! And, even better than that, shes willing to join me for a budgeting class so that we can manage our bills better! Im so happy for you, Elmer, I said. Just remember thiswhenever things start getting bad, think inside the square and do something good for yourself. The positive attitude will offset any negative energies that might arise and through bonding with your wife again, you will find that over time, it can only get better. I watched Elmer walk back to his house and it could have been my imagination, but I do believe there was a step in his gait that wasnt there before. Sometimes life gets in the way of maintaining a positive outlook on life, but if you stop for a moment and fix things within your own self, everything will come together not only for you, but for the loved ones in your family, too! Prom Hairstyle Guide
By Sarah Freeland If you are looking for the perfect prom hairstyle then you will want to start by looking at what is trendy this prom season. For the 2007 prom season think retro. Look back at styles from the 20s, 60s, 70s and 80s for inspiration. Consider the page boy, the shag or a pixie cut. Create formal looks from these styles by adding sparkly hair accessories like beaded headdresses, fancy headbands, beaded or bejeweled barrettes, or flowers. If you have medium length hair then you can select from longer versions of popular short haircuts, or you can use curls and waves to create a trendy look. With medium length hair you can select from hairstyles that are down and loose, or from styles that are up-does. Create formal looks for medium length haircuts by adding great hair accessories. Or if you are looking for an edgier look try adding spray color and gel. While 2007 hairstyle trends are focused on short hairstyles, long is still in. If you have long hair then your prom hairstyle should try to include long spiral curls or soft waves. Long hair can be worn up, however, the trend for long hair is to wear it down and soft. Create a more formal look by adding flowers and bejeweled hair clips. If you will be going to a hair salon to get your hair styled for the prom make sure that you arrive at your appointment with several ideas. While it is okay to have a main hairstyle in mind when you arrive at your hairstyling appointment, it is a good idea to have one or two backups just in case the first style doesnt work out. A good way to avoid hairstyle disasters at the eleventh hour, take advantage of free hairstyle consultations offered by most professional hairstylists. What Is A Marketing Initiative?
By Khemal Dole Marketing is not as simple as many may lead you to believe. In order for your business to be effective, you need to understand what is involved in promoting what you are offering in terms of products and services. That is where a good marketing initiative comes in to play. A marketing initiative is essentially anything that is clearly defined as a marketing effort. Simple, isn't it? It is basically anything specific in your marketing plan. So what types of things are considered marketing initiatives? Here are a few examples that may help you. For larger companies, a marketing initiative can be a theme. For instance, a set of commercials that use a specific character or funny situation over and over may be considered a marketing initiative. This, though, would certainly be more common with large businesses. An example of this is the Geiko commercials that feature the cute talking gekko. The initiative is to associate their car insurance services and products with a character that sticks in your head. Being cute is an added advantage. This is why many commercials use cute, cuddly characters such as babies and puppies etc. Another example of a marketing initiative is undertaking a certain method relentlessly. Sometimes you may wish to focus your efforts solely on one method of marketing. If, for instance, you decide to implement email marketing with great fervor, then you can call that your email marketing initiative. You will outline a plan very specific to that initiative. And you will carry it out. Focusing your efforts into a sole initiative demands that you understand it intimately. You better know what you are doing if that's the ONLY initiative you've got. In addition you also need to have a backup plan in case your initiative does not come through for you as you hoped. Often, when you put all your eggs in one basket, you better have more eggs! Another type of marketing initiative you may invoke is a large scale shift in what you are doing. If you are going away from traditional marketing to exclusively use the internet that is a whole new marketing initiative you are putting in place. Though not as specific as other examples, it is certainly something that directly affects the marketing of your company. These types of initiatives are usually done parallely with your existing marketing initiatives. The old initiatives are slowly phased out as the new one takes over. A marketing initiative can also be as simple as a shift in an idea. You can have a new marketing initiative that simply changes the way you promote your company, or more specifically what about the company you are trying to promote. A shift in positioning is a good example. Marketing initiative is a broad term that is used often. However, if you understand what it is you will be more able to effectively put an initiative in place if you need to. Changing or implementing an initiative is a big part of the promotion of your business. So it's important that you understand what it means in the first place. Khemal Dole owns and operates

How To Use An Amortization Calculator
By [http://ezinearticles.com/?expert=Arseniy_Olevskiy]Arseniy Olevskiy An amortization calculator is a tool that you can find offered to you throughout the web on loan lenders websites as well as on good lending informational websites. This tool is what is used to calculate the amortization of a loan. That is the way in which the loan is broken down throughout the repayment terms. For any loan that you purchase, this tool will help you as the consumer in many ways as well. It can actually be the tool that helps you to find the lowest cost loan and the one that is ideal for your specific needs. To use an amortization calculator , first find one. Again, these are free to use and they are available everywhere. You will be under no obligation to work with the lender or the company that provides them to you to use. Now, to use them, simply provide the following data to the calculator. What is the principal amount of money that you would like to borrow from the lender to purchase a home or to use for whatever other reason? What is the interest rate that the lender has provided to you? To know what is available to you, compare the rates of various lenders and even get online instant rate quotes as well. Then, provide the ones you qualify for here. What are the terms of the loan in which you are applying? The amortization calculator will need to know how long you play to schedule payments for to pay off the loan. The length of the loan is needed here. From here, the amortization calculator will do some figuring and will produce the following things for you to consider: The monthly payment of the loan as based on the information that you have provided for it.The payment broken down into how much interest as well as how much principal will be paid for each monthly payment sent in. This is usually much higher on the side of the interest during the first years of the loan and will later be lower as more principle is paid down. The total cost of the interest on the home loan. This is usually a high number and one no one wants to see.The total cost of the loan altogether including the interest and the principle of the loan. This is how much you are paying for your loan. This tool can provide so much help to anyone that is using it. Not only can you use it to produce this information for you to consider, but you can go back to the beginning and change the variables to suit your needs. You can lengthen the terms to see if this lowers your overall monthly payment amount. If the amount of interest is too high, you can go back and find a loan offering a lower rate and refigure it. You can compare the various amounts of a home that you are purchasing. Perhaps you can afford to spend more on your home. The amortization calculator can help you to understand all of these things. Choosing A Mother Of The Bride Dress - Pleasure Or Predicament?
By Nigel Patterson If you're the mother of the bride at an upcoming wedding, congratulations! You have a major part to play in supporting your daughter as she prepares for her big day. Being the mother of the bride (or the M.O.B., as she is sometimes known these days) is a role which calls for understanding, tact and diplomacy in many delicate areas, not least being the question of wedding attire. As well as helping your daughter to select her bridal gown, you have another tricky choice to make: finding your own mother of the bride dress. As with most aspects of wedding planning, there are conventions that some couples wish to follow and others they will prefer to ignore. But if you know what the 'rules' are, you'll be better able to decide when you want to break them! And in most cases, the principles governing mother of the bride gowns are designed to allow her due precedence -- without overshadowing the bride herself! Appropriate color. Many people feel that mother of the bride dresses should not be white or black. In the first case, of course, it's because white is traditionally the color reserved for the bride. The second rule harks back to a time when the bride's mother could signal her unhappiness at her daughter's marriage by wearing the color of mourning. While such a gesture might be thought extreme in today's world, it is still frowned upon in some quarters for the M.O.B. to wear black -- perhaps simply because it might be considered bad luck. These days, however, what's appropriate is often dictated by the style of the wedding and the bride's preference -- and in an era when evening weddings are not unusual, black might be an acceptable choice. Coordinate with the mother of the groom. While it's customary for the M.O.B. to choose her dress first, it's considerate as well as prudent to liaise with the groom's mother in matters of style and color. This will at least minimize the risk of both mothers turning up to the wedding in the same outfit! Complement the dresses of the bride and bridesmaids. As a member of the wedding party, the eyes of the guests will be drawn to your outfit too. Plan well ahead with the bride to decide on an age-appropriate design and color to coordinate with their styles. As part of the build-up such a joyous event as a wedding, choosing a mother of bride dress ought to be fun. And while finding exactly the right outfit may require a considerable expense of time, energy and shoe leather, it's a task that you can enjoy in the company of your daughter or a close friend or two, if you like. After all, the wedding will be partly your day too! Weight Loss Tips
By Jameson Simpson Healthy weight loss is never going to be easy, nor is it going to be fast, but if you do it the right way then you are going to see results that last you for the rest of your life. You dont necessarily need a specific program or diet to lose weight the healthy way; you just need the proper guidance and motivation to get moving and eating properly. Here are some tips that can help you through your weight loss journey: * Count your calories For most people there is a certain amount of calories they should eat per day to maximize weight loss. It should never dip below 1200 and should never be above 2000 unless you are a competitive athlete. For the average person, 1500 calories per day is the right amount to start losing weight. * Eat 5 to 6 smaller meals per day Most people are stuck on the thought that they must eat 3 large meals per day, but for people that are overweight that usually means that by the time lunch or dinner rolls around they are so hungry that they may overeat. By eating 5 to 6 smaller meals a day, which includes snacks, it helps them to feel full more of the day, eliminating cravings and eating binges. * Drink your water Youve heard it before, but it is the absolute truth. Drinking at least 8 glasses of water will help you to lose weight because it lowers the amount of water your body stores, and it makes you feel fuller so that you dont put as much food into your body. * Exercise Food gives you energy, but you must burn off the calories so that you will lose the weight. Without exercise you are consuming more energy then you are burning off, and you wont lose weight as quickly or effectively so get moving to lose the fat. With the weight loss tips you should be able to weight loss and keep it off. Don't give up on you weight loss goals and you should be able to shed you unwanted pounds. Jameson Simpson is a childhood obesity and adult weight loss researcher. He maintains websites about weight loss and other health related issues. What Are the Advantages of Buying PCGS Graded Coins?
By Keith Scott As a coin collector or an investor of coins, you no doubt have asked yourself the question of why you should buy professionally graded coins. These coins are also known as slabbed or certified vs. an uncertified coin which is known as "raw". The term "slabbed" came about because certified coins are in a plastic slab. A topic such as this is quite controversial as each side of the coin has its staunch proponents. In this article though, we will concentrate on the advantages of graded coins, specifically PCGS graded coins. As you may know, there are several other grading services out there but PCGS has been ranked the most consistent in grading and ability. PCGS, a subsidiary of Collectors Universe, started grading coins for the public in 1986 and since then PCGS has graded millions and millions of coins. So why buy PCGS coins? Lets answer that question now. The first reason, and this applies to all slabbed coins, is that a slabbed graded coin is now protected from further damage. Imagine taking out your best coin, a 1942-S Walking Liberty in what you believe to be MS-67 condition. In this condition, PCGS gives an estimated value of $25,000.00. It is an absolutely beautiful coin. To prepare for this moment, you put on your white coin gloves so as to not pass body oils to the coin. As you pick it up to examine it the telephone rings, or your two year old snuck up behind you and nearly trips you. The coin goes flying out of your hands and is rolling across your floor right towards the floor heat vent. You make a mad dash and dive to save the coin, but it is too late. The coin rolls over the lip of the heat vent and slips between the cracks into your house heating duct. You lift the vent out of place and reach in for your coin. Fortunately it did not go around the bend and begin the spiral down to the furnace. It may as well have. Your once $25,000 coin now has several scrapes, scuffs, and a ding smack dab above "In God We Trust" due to the screw it landed on in the vent. This same coin in MS-65 condition is worth $700. Even worse, in MS-64 it is worth $110. While the coin still has its original mint luster, the physical damage is there. Do you think this is an extreme example? Maybe, but I guarantee you that many a coin has been accidentally dropped by dealers and collectors reducing its grade by a couple notches and its value by countless thousands of dollars. Personally, and sadly, it has happened to me. I once dropped what I thought would be a MS-66 Red 1909 VDB Lincoln cent. Upon close examination after I dropped it, I noticed a few scrapes and scuffs not previously their. Yes, they were minor and barely visible, but I had it graded anyway, and it came back as MS-65. While my example was not with a $25,000 coin, it happens. I now clear a special area for handling GEM coins so this never happens again. A certified coin comes in a hard plastic container that not only protects it from silly mistakes but also it is sealed to further protect it from the elements. Yes, the natural elements (air pollution) can damage coins over long periods of time. Most grading companies will encase the graded coin in an air-tight container to ensure preservation. The second reason to buy a PCGS slabbed coin is that any coin graded a specific grade will retain that grade. A MS-65 coin will always be a MS-65 coin, unless of course you submit it for re-grading. With PCGS coins though, you can be fairly certain in the consistency of graded coins. With other grading services, inconsistencies bring uncertainty into an assigned grade. The third reason to buy PCGS graded coins is that when it comes time to sell, PCGS graded coins will command a premium over other slabbed coins. As an example, I checked recent sales of the very common 1921 P Morgan dollar in MS65 condition. Those certified from PCGS were commanding prices upwards of 50% over similarly graded coin from other grading services. While this is an extreme case, it simply points out the faith by collectors in PCGS coins. Naturally, it will cost you more to buy PCGS coins than other certified coins. The fourth reason to purchase PCGS certified coins is a coin graded by PCGS gives it instant credibility. Grading services first came about so that coins could be bought and sold without the buyer having to see it first. This was in the age before digital cameras and the internet. While there was a grading system in place in the early 80s, grading was very arbitrary. A coin graded F-12 by one person would grade G-4 by another. By introducing an outside, disinterested party into the equation, both sides of a transaction could agree that the grade was correct. The idea was to create a system whereby dealers could trade/buy/sell coins without seeing them first. The idea was a hit. Today PCGS graded coins offer instant credibility. Whether you are buying or selling though, always buy the coin and not the grade. I have regrettably bought a few truly ugly high grade PCGS coins. While they were in decent shape, some had very unattractive toning and had I seen the coin first, I would not have bought it. Even though a coin carries a certain grade, you still need to ask details about certified coins and look at them first. With the introduction of the State Quarter program several years ago, coin collecting has seen a surge in the number of collectors. Thousands and thousand of new collectors have entered the hobby and with that there will be a higher demand for certain coins. While most of us began our hobby for the pure enjoyment of collecting, we still like to know that our investment is somewhat safe. I believe, and this is my opinion only, that with more and more collectors entering the hobby, certain high-end certified coins will continue to rise in value due to demand. As those collectors who started on State Quarters mature in their collecting endeavors, they will no doubt begin to collect older coins such as Walking Liberty halves and Morgan Dollars. Most likely this will be coins that have been certified. This will no doubt raise the value of certified coins. But this is only my guess. Coin Collecting can be a wonderful hobby and as you refine your collecting interests, PCGS graded coins can make a wonderful addition to your collection. As always, Happy Collecting! Keith Scott has been a collector for over 30 years and owns a small internet-based coin store at http://www.mountainviewcoins.com Visit his website http://www.mountainviewcoins.com/pcgs-certified-rare-investment-grade-coins.htm for certified coins and the history of other US coins. Small Business Marketing Solution - Build the Bloom Team
By Craig Lutz-Priefert No matter how adept a marketer you develop into, youll still be a finite human being. We vigorously urge you to be fruitful, and multiply your small business marketing efforts by creating a core team made up of key employees. You already know who the achievers are in your company. Theyre that 20% of the workforce that is dedicated to the company and excels in their positions. They are the people that the company is built upon. Pick four or five from this group of achievers and create a mini marketing advisory board to aid you. We like to call this group the Bloom Team. Your job is to provide the seed, the core kernels of the marketing ideas, and to nurture them along. The achievers will amplify your efforts and spread them to the rest of the company and to your customer base. Once that happens, your marketing efforts will grow nicely. Your ongoing use of the Bloom Team will lift your company to a level far beyond what you can achieve by slugging through the tough job of marketing all alone. Dont fool yourself; it wont be easy. Welding together a functional team of co-workers is a challenge for anybody. If you dont have extensive marketing training yourself, some employees may see you as actually being inferior in ability to them. Others will see the formation of a team as a waste of their time; a situation that will not effect any good change for the company and simply inflict more work on them. You dont need negative people on the Bloom Team, but neither is it wise to fill it with yes-men (or yes-women) that will simply go along with all your ideas. Above all, you need people you can trust and who want to see the company grow. If they have these two qualities, you can work with them to build a team that will help your company grow through much improved marketing. A useful acronym for the ways you can leverage the achiever group is VIC:

Secret Catfish DOUGH BAITS - Success with a BIG "Twist" in the Tail!
By Tim F. Richardson * A crucial lesson about fishing baits! * I heard about a lake in my locality where there was rumoured to be a giant catfish. I had been warned about going to fish there; Beware; fishing rods have been snapped with ease by the monster that lurks there! Well, I never expected to hook such a fish, and although I had hooked and caught some large catfish of about 30 pounds, it did not bother me in the slightest that I might hook a monster. The chances were so slim. I had fished at night at the lake and landed twelve sturgeon up to about 12 pounds. They were not the 30 pound carp I was aiming for, but great sport all the same, as they tail walked on the water during fights. This was a new trick for me. I got to thinking I needed a special bait to hook the carp. Perhaps one they had never seen before. I had begun fishing at the lake using my old favourite earthworms, and had already sampled the delights of the lakes tiny perch and slimy eels. A bonus 15 pound carp was more like the size I desired, but still small when compared to my personal goals here. Apparently the carp in the lake went over 40 pounds, and so my thoughts were fixed on these! I decided to go back to basics and make a homemade paste, dough bait. I was into making dough baits, as I had found them so far superior to using ordinary boilies when used and applied correctly. I heard a rumour that trout pellets were being fed into the lake in very large amounts, and so this might affect results on boilies too. I refused to use trout pellets themselves as bait, because I did not want to be lazy, and wanted to keep learning more about bait and their effects, by doing thing differently to other anglers. Anyway, I did not wish to copy everyone else, and use the same bait as them; I would simply end up merely catching average catches. And I wanted to specifically target big catches and the biggest fish! So I went off to the supermarket and purchased five pounds of prepared pork sausage meat. I added to this 3 small pots of garlic granules, 2 dozen hen eggs, 5 pounds of cheap semolina powder and 5 tins of sweetcorn to be liquidized. I obtained a bottle of body building liquid amino acids in cherry flavour, and a small bottle of alcohol based vitamin and mineral supplement, and some sea salt. All from the health food shop. Finally, I found 10 boxes of oats and I was ready to make some new bait. After an evening of experimenting with these ingredients and making a sticky mess in buckets, I finally made up a good few pounds of paste dough for free offerings or ground bait. The trickiest bit was finding the best ratios of ingredients to make effective hook baits. I wanted to make them tougher and scald them in boiling water to give them a protective skin without losing all their attraction. I had filled these hook baits, just like the ground bait, with lots of cherry flavours amino acids compound, liquidized sweet corn, sea salt, garlic granules and vitamin and mineral supplement. To cut a long story short, the first I night fished, produced a surprising three 30 pound catfish in a row. Wow! The next week, the night produced four 30 pound catfish. Great! The following night produced three 30 pound catfish a 20 pound catfish and two fish lost. Fantastic sport, but where were the carp that I was actually fishing for? I had to assume that the catfish were actually forcing the carp away from the bait in the swim. But I was pleased to be getting such good sport. I decided to give the bait one more night and returned with my girlfriend for company. Again at about 2 am my bite alarm shattered the peace and quiet, and I strained to slow down another hard pulling catfish. I had gotten extremely used to this pattern of strike, play, land and weigh at night. This fish looked just like previous ones and weighed 35 pounds. I was looking forward to catching maybe four more like it that night. But strangely, it was not to be. I was camping out under a fishing umbrella with sides attached to keep the wind off. My girlfriend slept like a log at the back of the tent on the comfortable bed chair. I was heroically perched precariously at the front, facing the cold night on the rocky old sun-lounger, and in the old sleeping bag with the broken zip. This set-up might bring back memories for a few of you! Just as I had given up hope of another fish at 7 am, an alarm screamed into life and I struggled to reach the bouncing rod. Unfortunately, I never got there; the curse of the sleeping bag with the broken zip combined with a bed chair that kindly flipped me over backwards and trapped me, put paid to that! I angrily and resignedly recast the rod, without much hope of another fish as daylight began to break, and packing up time beckoned. I heard an alarm suddenly beep almost immediately, but fish hitting the line were very common at this time and I took no notice. 5 minutes later and it happened again and I made a mental note. 2 minutes later I felt all was not normal. So I gave the rod a really big strike, like you do, not expecting anything to happen. Only this time, nothing really did happen. The rod hooped right over and did not move. Damn, I must have hooked a snag on the lake bed, just as I was about to pack up too. I thought. Just then I felt the bottom move, very slowly, by inches it seemed at a time. It was about then my heart hit my mouth, as I tried to contain the shock of the situation. I automatically walked backwards, and started to heave the monster off the bottom. It came up an inch at a time, the rod was well past its test curve, and creaking at the butt end. The line sang strained high notes of the kind I had never heard before! The unseen leviathan took back control and took off slowly towards the centre of the lake, with me straining every muscle to slow it down, as the tightly set clutch whined way too fast for my liking. There was a massive boil at the surface as the great fish changed direction. It charged at the opposite bank. The fisherman opposite fell off his chair as the giant struck the bank right in front of him. I was too focussed to laugh at the time! Taking deep gulps of breathe, I determined not to give the stunned fish an inch of line, now I had experienced the power it possessed. Cranking it back slowly a foot at a time, it took an eternity to heave back in front of me, just beyond some weed beds. As it came along in front of me my girlfriend held out my meagre 42 inch carp landing net. As we watched the fish pass between two weed beds in front of us, we counted off the length in feet. After counting about six and a half feet, it became like a scene out of Jaws as we both said in very dead pan voices: Were going to need a bigger net! When help arrived, we hauled the giant catfish up onto the bank, onto waiting mats and an especially long weigh sling. As the weigh scales pointer hovered around the magical 100 pound mark I was in a daze. I was trying to remember what I put into the bait that created this experience so I could make it happen again! I landed over thirty 30 pound catfish in the following six weeks, but I never again hooked the monster on the same bait. I guess he just learnt his lesson! How To Grow Garlic In Your Organic Garden - Step by Step: Part 1
By Julie Williams What an amazing plant! Garlic (Allium sativum) has been around for more than 3,000 years. Its not that surprising really when you look at the culinary and medicinal purposes it boasts. Garlic is not only a staple in the kitchen, but its health benefits are outstanding as it is a natural antibiotic and has antiseptic properties. In the organic garden it is often used as the base for various insect deterrents and it also has antifungal properties. Garlic is also a very useful companion plant. Growing Garlic Step by Step 1. Choosing the Position. Grow garlic in an open, sunny position. As a companion plant it can get a little lost amongst larger, leafy plants especially if the stems suddenly die back. Grow garlic as a companion plant, but also have a plot of its own so that you can be sure youll have enough to last you the season. A plot about 1m square is big enough to grow about 60 bulbs. 2. Soil Type. Because garlic is a bulb it needs a well drained soil or it will just rot under the ground as the bulb is forming. Soil that is friable with plenty of organic matter is the best. Dont add fresh manures as they are usually high in nitrogen, which will encourage foliage rather than the development of bulbs. Dig in blood and bone prior to planting or top dress with compost. If your soil is a heavy clay, use raised beds or you can even grow them in pots. 3. Planting Time. Garlic needs to be planted in autumn (fall) and harvested in summer. Planting time depends a little on your particular climate. The hotter the autumn temperatures, the later the planting. If you live in a sub-tropical climate, it may be best to leave it til winter. Garlic grows in two stages. The roots and foliage grow through autumn and winter. Then in the warmer weather the bulbs begin to develop. By summer the bulbs have grown to a good size and the foliage will start to wither. 4. Choosing your Corms. Each garlic bulb is made up of corms. You pull the corms away from the bulb to plant. These will become your new garlic bulbs. You may have to buy commercial garlic bulbs to start out with unless you know someone who grows organically who is willing to give (sell or swap) you your starting bulbs.
Garlic from the supermarket or fruit and veg shops may have been sprayed with
chemicals to stop them shooting. Some garlic is imported and may have a different
growing season, so will fail. After a few years you will have enough stock to have
supplies for the kitchen and for next seasons crop. 5. How to Plant. Pull away all of the corms from the parent bulb. Each bulb will have between 15 and 20 corms. Gently push each corm into the soil, just below the soil, with the flat base at the bottom and the pointed tip facing upwards. Allow about 10cm / 4inches between corms and 30cm / 12inches between rows. If some corms pop out of the soil after a week or so it means that the roots are growing.
Just gently push them back below the soil surface and mulch with straw. Look for my next article, Part 2, on maintenance, harvesting and uses for garlic. Marketing Myth #3: Perception Is Not Reality
By Mary Eule This is one of the hardest concepts for business owners to accept. They waste countless hours trying to convince unyielding clients to accept their version of reality, which often prevents them from communicating their unique benefits; alleviating significant flaws and/or ignoring golden opportunities. It is vitally important that any one who has responsibility for growing a business or organization understand and embrace this critical tenet. It does not matter if outside perceptions are factual... because consumers behave based on decisions formed by attitudes founded on their beliefs, which are often subconscious. (If this sounds familiar, congratulations!) This has particularly dangerous consequences when companies are forced into an undesirable place primarily because they fail to communicate their unique benefits. Thus, their inside reality is aware of their distinguishing qualities but outside perceptions are clueless. In other words, the public may look at your business; your competitors businesses; and/or completely unrelated businesses and view them identically, good or bad. This means that they base their purchase decision solely on price or convenience. Why? Because they dont have any other information! Some companies can operate in this environment for a while but over time it gets them nowhere (except closer to extinction). Remember this, competing on price alone is the quickest way I know of to ensure that you will never be able to earn a substantial income let alone, what youre worth. It is a no-win situation and no matter how tempting, do not fall into that snare. And businesses will continue to compete in this way until they do something to alter their prospects perceptions! Avoiding the Commodity Ambush You must be willing to face and accept reality and as my daughter-in-law is fond of saying, and dont pretty it up! This is the first step in making sure you dont get lumped into the commodity pot. The worst (or best?) thing youll discover may be that your customers and prospects do indeed see you as similar, or identical, to others. Once you obtain this vital information, you must identify specific areas where your inside reality does not match outside perceptions. For instance, you may need to do a better job of educating the public about your exceptional qualities (i.e. service, delivery, product benefits, etc.) or conversely, you may need to fix gaps. Lets assume that youre the most knowledgeable, educated and competent financial advisor in your area, having earned and saved your clients much more than your competitors. At a networking event you give your business card to a qualified prospect in need of your services and you schedule an initial meeting in your office. However, when the prospect arrives the waiting room is bland and the sofa upholstery is threadbare; the rest rooms are in desperate need of cleaning; your receptionist is curt; your office is a mess and you cant find the forms you need. Then you spend the next hour reiterating the professional qualities you posses careful attention to details, reliable service, thoroughly researched advice, etc. Youre convinced that you have the know-how and abilities to provide the very best financial advice to him or her, but they choose another company. Why? Because there was a huge gap between what you said and what they experienced. Your words said, excellence and professional and your environment and staff said mediocrity and fly-by-night! As the saying goes, If it looks like a duck and walks like a duck, its probably a duck. What does a dirty bathroom have to do with sound financial advice? In this case, everything So you can either argue the point (i.e. one has nothing to do with the other) all the way to the poor house or do whatever is necessary to create an office environment that reflects your level of professionalism. Alternatively, your customers may continue to choose you over a competitor because you consistently deliver more product or service value that youre not even aware of! And again, the only way to find this out for certain is to ask your repeat customers! For example, women may choose one comparable hair salon over the other because they are more careful schedulers and they never have a long wait. Presto! Instant differentiation handed to you on a silver platter! The third, and possibly the worst, perception gap brings us back to the commodity nowhere land. In order to transcend this place youll need to force an apples-and-oranges comparison between you and your competitors. You must design, execute and communicate such significant differences between you, that your customers would be foolish to take their business anywhere else, regardless of price. At this point, its enough to understand that this is an essential concept. Do not, however, worry about creating yours just yet Theres lots of help in later chapters, so hold on for now! Classic Symptoms of a Myth #3 Believer They Insist that their customers and prospects have no idea what theyre talking about Believe that a good product at the best price wins Put very little effort into retaining the customers they already have Ignore the importance of contact personnel, environment, and other customer touch points, particularly in professional service companies Lack any standardized quality program Mary Eule specializes in helping small and medium-sized businesses get and keep profitable customers. No One Gives A Damn About Your Business. Unless You Give 'em A Reason To
By John Follis The good news is that there are thousands of people looking for what you offer. The bad news is that those people are extremely tough to attract not to mention that your very livelihood depends on it. It's a scary thought when you think about it. And many don't. Some are simply ignorant to the marketing realities. For others the expense and complexity associated with any kind of formal marketing effort is simply too intimidating. They rely souly on word-of-mouth. The fact is, word-of-mouth is great, fabulous, wonderful and not enough if you're serious about growing your business. Do You Believe in Marketing? Do you see marketing as a necessary investment or a questionable expense? It's an
important question because if you don't truly believe in the power of smart
marketing you'll sabotage anything you try...like driving with the brake on.
Marketing done well is an investment and there's no better investment than your
business. Determine your Objective and Budget. Like any investment it involves planning and patience. You start by establishing a
realistic objective and then determine what it takes to achieve it. That takes the
analysis of several factors such as: o the industry you're in o the maturity of your business. o the specific product or service being offered. o the target audience. o the competitive environment. o timing. So, what does it all cost? Again, it depends on what your short and long term goals
are. For some, 5% of annual sales may be plenty to invest. For others 10% may not
be enough. Once you determine your goal it's easier to determine the budget you
need to achieve it. Good vs. Great vs. Do-It-Yourself. "Good" marketing isn't good enough. "Good" marketing, which is most of what you
see, does only half the job. It informs people but doesn't touch them emotionally.
And if you don't touch them emotionally they won't buy your product. It doesn't
matter if you have the best product or service in the world if you're not getting your
prospects excited enough to act. Some business owners decide to take on the marketing challenge themselves. A few
even treat it as child's play. One potential client actually asked me my opinion of
something his 10-year old came up with. Needless to say we weren't a good fit.
Most business owners realize they aren't marketing experts. The problem is they
just aren't sure who is. A common mistake is the assumption that the people who
do a logo or brochure can also create a great ad or effective marketing effort. I was
once asked about a campaign created by a company's design firm. Not surprisingly
the campaign was totally void of a selling idea. Yet the client was clearly sold on it.
When I asked the client what exactly he liked about the campaign he enthusiastically
replied, "The green -- it's a real attention grabber!" The design firm may not have
done a very good advertising job, but clearly they did an exceptional sales job. It's
just a shame the client invested $800,000 in it. Measuring Effectiveness. A direct response mechanism (ie. phone number, web address, etc) is one way to
track response. Of course, sales increase is usually the ultimate barometer. And
when you combine a great product with a great marketing effort the effect can be
obvious. For our client Sorrell Ridge Fruit Spread sales jumped 90% a month after
the campaign broke. Though that was exceptional most clients can tell after a few
months if the marketing effort is working. Get a Buzz. Buzz is another way to measure effectiveness. Are people noticing you and talking
about you? Our client Marble Church knows about that. The attention-getting
campaign got the attention of both local New Yorkers and national press. And with a
limited marketing budget church membership increased 31% while web site traffic
quadrupled. The campaign, which started out as an experiment, is now in its sixth
year. So, despite the perceived expense and complexity of marketing you must appreciate
the need and value of it. Done right it's the best way to make a lot of people give a
damn about your business. 2005 John Follis. All rights reserved. For John's booklet: "How to Attract and Excite Your Prospects: A Guide for Getting

A Rapid Weight Loss Diet - Is It Good For You?
By Ray Darken The so called rapid weight loss diet is one of the closest things to a crash diet. One description of a rapid weight loss diet is this - A crash diet is a diet which is extreme in its deprivations - typically severely restricting calorie intake. Meant to achieve rapid weight loss, a crash diet differs from outright starvation only slightly. Crash diets are typically unhealthy and are rarely - if ever - recommended by doctors or dietitians. Crash diets may lead to malnutrition. When someone discontinues a crash diet, the "rebound-effect" is often experienced. This causes a person to eat far more than normal, causing them to regain both the weight that was recently lost due to the diet as well as additional weight. This is caused by an evolutionary trait of the human race that historically only took effect in times of famine: after a famine ended, people's bodies naturally craved to regain both the weight that was lost, plus additional weight as well, in order to protect themselves in case of another famine. I think it's apparant that this type of diet is not in most peoples best interest. Let's take it a little further. It has been observed that some crash dieting or rapid weight loss can lead to Anorexia. This is defined by a loss of appetite or lack of desire to eat. When people experience appetite loss, decreased energy consumption will subsequently lead to weight loss. When inadequate calories are consumed, the body may become weaker and less able to tolerate many chalenges. As body weight decreases, cachexia sets in, and a general failure to thrive may make it more difficult to fight off illness and infection. A poor response to cancer treatments, reduced quality of life, and death may result from substantial weight loss. The spiraling effect of a patient's reluctance to eat is a source of frequent anxiety for caregivers. Weight loss due to anorexia may be temporary or may continue at a life-threatening pace if the patient continues to consume inadequate energy to sustain body weight. The most commonly known form of anorexia is satiation following the consumption of food. This can happen in all normal humans and is known as postprandial anorexia. It's important and healthy as it prevents overeating and of course obesity. Anorexia nervosa is an eating disorder characterized by voluntary starvation and exercise stress. Anorexia nervosa is a complex disease, involving psychological and sociological components. Needless to say, it is important to ensure that if you decide to take on a diet, make sure it is healthy and can supply the nutrients people need to carry on life in a healthy and vigorous manner. One of the most highly praised diets existing to day is the Mediterranean diet mostly due to its history and the formal research that has been undertaken. It is well worth your while to look into this particlular diet further if you have the slightest doubt about undertaking a rapid weight loss diet. Can Antidepressants Ever Cure You?
By Christopher Green Theyre the plagues of the modern world. Stress, depression and anxiety are on the increase every year and they show no signs of ending their relentless onslaught. Over 40 million people are affected by these illnesses annually, and for the majority, powerful antidepressant drugs offer the only solution. Whats curious is that over seventy percent of people who stop taking them, for any length of time, will relapse into another stressful or depressive episode Somethings rotten in Denmark. Because if these drugs are as effective as their manufacturers claim, then sufferers should be cured of their illness. Clearly, this isnt happening. If these drugs are so good, why dont they cure sufferers? The commonly held belief, both by the medical profession and sufferers is that anti-depressant drugs are the most effective treatment. This isnt quite true. Antidepressant drugs DO help a sufferer. But only TEMPORARILY. They cannot offer a permanent cure because anti-depressants treat ONE of the SYMPTOMS of these illnesses reduced levels of "happy chemicals" called neurotransmitters. Neurotransmitters are the chemicals inside our brains that help to regulate our moods. What anti-depressants do is give sufferers a "boost" by raising levels of neurotransmitters. The problem concerns a seventy percent chance of relapse when sufferers stop taking the meds. This happens because the drugs havent tackled the root cause of these illnesses. By boosting levels of happy chemicals the drugs simply mask the problem. In the short term, giving our mental well-being a boost by increasing the levels of happy chemicals is a helpful step in STARTING the recovery process. The last sentence is very important. It explains how these drugs should be used. Because when we feel stressed out, burned out, terrified of the future or that life has no point (all symptoms of stressful and depressive illnesses), its almost impossible to function. Finding your way out of the fog is so hard. And thats where antidepressants can help. By providing a boost, you can feel more able to cope. You can START to take the first steps towards recovery. But they cannot provide a permanent cure because the only way to cure these illnesses is to address the root cause. The root cause are harmful mental habits and processes we have learned and used for most of our lives since childhood in most cases. And there lies the crucial difference. Antidepressants can help us in the short-term by CONTROLLING the illness. Learning the mental habits and processes that crush these illnesses so they cannot even begin to arise help us in the long-term by CURING these illnesses. I firmly believe that people who are suffering from stress, anxiety, panic, depression and similar illnesses, want to get rid of it from their lives forever. Cure means cured, permanently. I overcame a terrible 5-year period of anxiety-induced depression without taking antidepressants. I did it by learning more effective mental skills and processes and I turned my life around and found happiness again. What worked for me will work for you and it will provide the one thing you deserve and what antidepressant drugs can never provide: A permanent cure to your suffering. IMPORTANT: PLEASE CONSULT WITH YOUR HEALTH PROFESSIONAL BEFORE YOU STOP TAKING ANY ANTIDEPRESSANT MEDICATION. Copyright 2006 Christopher Green About The Author
